Shivering Songs KICKOFF + ‘Secret Path’ Film Screening + Pass Pickup

The Playhouse
Doors 6:00 pm/Show 7:30 am/ENDS at 9:30 pm

In partnership with United Way of Central NB we present ‘Secret Path’. ‘Secret Path’ tells the heartrending story of Chanie Wenjack, who died near Kenora, Ontario on October 22, 1966, as he tried to walk the nearly four hundred miles home from the Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School. Fifty years later, Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie has memorialized Wenjack, while using his story as a vehicle for talking about reconciliation.

6:00PM – Pass Pickup
7:30PM – ‘Secret Path’ Film Screening

Following the film, in partnership with the Aboriginal Peoples Council and the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre, we will host a panel and community conversation where audience members can share their feelings and reactions to the film, learn from each other, and discuss how it matters in our community today.  Our hope is that this gathering prompts a conversation in Fredericton that encourages further understanding, engagement, and local action toward reconciliation.  The conversation will be moderated by St. Thomas University’s Endowed Chair in Native Studies, Former Lieutenant Governor, the Hon. Graydon Nicholas.

We would be honoured if you would join us for this important film and conversation.

We are proud to partner with the Friends of the Fredericton Playhouse to bring this unique event to the Festival. FOTFP believe that the arts are an integral part of our lives and it is essential that we encourage and support community accessibility to diverse artistic impression.  They offer a number of education and outreach programs that ensure the arts are accessible to everyone in the Greater Fredericton area. Please lend your support to allow for many more artistic community events to come!

Songwriter’s Intensive Showcase with host Jim Bryson

Charlotte Street Arts Centre
Doors 4:30 pm/Show 5:00 pm/ENDS at 7:00 pm

The Songwriter’s Intensive is a professional development opportunity for up and coming songwriters in New Brunswick. Through a partnership between Shivering Songs festival and Charlotte Street Arts Centre, we invite a nationally acclaimed songwriter to work collaboratively with a dozen of New Brunswick’s emerging singer/songwriters. This year we are pleased to announce that Ottawa songsmith Jim Bryson will be our lead songwriter. Throughout the weekend, artists are immersed in a safe, supportive environment in which they experiment, take risks and learn. They work on singing, chord progressions and more advanced aspects of songwriting such as lyrical integrity, crafting a style, performing, etc. Through working with an experienced, acclaimed songwriter, and in collaboration with fellow musicians, participants have the opportunity to fast-track their skill development and receive real-life advice from someone who was once in their shoes.

The weekend is capped off with a live performance at Charlotte Street Arts Centre featuring the workshop participants.
